‘Lyddie Shears’ Violin 2025

This violin was inspired by Rosie Hood’s beautiful folk song about Lyddie Shears. The song tells the tale of a shape-shifting witch who dances across the downs as a hare, only to be struck down by the silver bullet of a disgruntled local.

The outline features viol-style corners which are a nod to England’s important heritage as a centre of viol making in the Baroque era.

Alongside the hare’s head scroll, there are other nods to the folk tale: the back features a small silver dowel in the place of what is usually a wooden location pin, to represent a silver bullet. The wood is an unusually patterned type of maple, selected for its appearance as fur.
