Select the right size instrument

To ensure your child is playing the right sized instrument, we first recommending discussing sizing with your teacher, as some have preferences regarding what size to start with. However if this is not possible, you can use the sizing guide below by using a fabric tape measure. This gives a rough guide for you to work from but I would recommend that you go in to a violin shop in order to get a precise fitting.

Violin: Neck to wrist length

1/16: 33.5 cm or less, 13 ¼ inches
1/10: 36 cm, 14 ¼ inches
1/8: 38.5 cm, 15 ¼ inches
1/4: 44 cm,17 ¼ inches
1/2: 48.5 cm,19 inches
3/4: 52 cm, 20 ½ inches
4/4: 54 cm, 21 ¼ inches

If you’re an adult player, it’s generally recommended that you play a 4/4. However if you’re particularly short you may be more comfortable with a 7/8 size.
