About the course
This course is run in a flexible way with no set curriculum from week to week. This is to accommodate the vastly different paces that everyone works at, depending on their experience levels. Each student will be offered individual guidance as they undertake their practical work.
You are not limited to making a ‘traditional’ violin during this class. You may also opt to make a viola, 5-string violin, cornerless, decorated violin or pochette.
To make a traditional violin usually takes around 250 hours to complete from start to finish (cornerless violins and pochettes will be quicker). Please bear this in mind when it comes to your project – it will take a while to finish an instrument through evening classes alone. As your confidence and skill progresses, I recommend that you to set up a small workbench or space at home where you can carry out some of the more straightforward tasks between classes.
in the PDF below you’ll find more information about what you’ll need to bring with you, and answers to other frequently asked questions. Please read the entire PDF prior to signing up to the course.
The course fee is inclusive of access to most of the required tools, but not of your materials (i.e. wood and fittings). There is a materials list and recommended suppliers in the course PDF. If you have any queries about what to purchase and when, I can provide advice via email before the course starts.
